As part of this audit process, our team members responded with waste reduction strategies. Both the audit and the report touch on a wide range of elements within our university to determine the waste that our students, teachers and collaborators produce and how we can actively mitigate these practices. According to the most recent data from the Council of Vice-Presidents of Ontario, the average salary of BFA members is the second lowest in the province and the second lowest of 22 institutions. This figure is particularly worrying given that Brescia is the only female university in Canada and the BFA faculty is 72% female, the highest proportion of academics at a university in Canada. The BFA aims for equal pay for work equal to that of the faculties of their peer institutions. Huron University College Faculty Association (HUCFA) has entered into its first collective agreement as a union. The faculty association has been negotiating for many decades for the faculty and, more recently, for the university`s contractual faculty. This recent agreement is special because it comes after the faculties association has decided to unite to formalize its negotiating relationships and expand the negotiating tools at its disposal. The four-year contract is based on a solid rights base and for the first time expands many faculties of courses and program sessions. Contract faculties are now guaranteed institutional support, such as office space, car parks, e-mail, technology assistance and library services. In addition, employment security measures have been strengthened. The faculty receives a one-year appointment after teaching three or more courses for two consecutive years.
All new employees and those returning from university to Huron after a long absence and needing an e-mail account from Western University must complete the following form. Once completed, it will have to be signed by the competent supervisor and subject to the transformation of Jane Parker, OAC assistant. On September 28, 2016, after a day and a half of negotiations, the Brescia Faculty Association reached a preliminary agreement with the employer. The BFA began negotiating the extension of our first collective agreement at the end of April and executed a 94% strike mandate on 7 September. Pay and work equity with small school comparators has been an important priority in this round of negotiations. The whole association is very grateful for the support it received during the briefage campaign. Chair: Neil Brooks, 519.438.7224 ext. 240, nbrooks@huron.uwo.ca “Today`s vote sends a strong message that Brescia`s faculty is united in its call for a fair and equitable collective agreement,” said Melissa Jean, BFA President. With our members behind, we look forward to returning to the negotiating table to address the important issues that remain on the table. In a post-J.C. voting cycle, members of the Brescia Faculty Association (BFA) authorized their board of directors to strike in the absence of a fair and reasonable agreement during collective bargaining.
